Meet your coach.

I’m Joe Marson. I’m a vocal coach and working singer-songwriter, and I’ve spent a pretty ridiculous amount of my life trying to understand why the voice does what it does. I know what it’s like to struggle with your voice—to overthink it, fight with it, lose trust in it, and have to find your way back. That’s a huge part of why I teach the way I do. I lost my voice for almost two years in 2020. Finding it again took me on a journey toward thoroughly understanding the technical and emotional elements of both my voice and my students’ voices.

I’ve toured throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia, released recordings with millions of streams, and had music placed in film and television. You can find out more about me at www.joemarson.com.

The Golden Ratio Approach

Using the ancient wisdom of balance.

Singing can be many things, all of which I love.

Some people sing for the pure fun of it—when that song comes on at the bar, in the shower, or during a road-trip shout-along. Some sing to express. Some sing to impress. Some sing as an act of devotion to a higher power.

I happily teach singers at every level of interest. But for those of you who feel called to it, learning to sing can teach lessons on the deepest level.

The Golden Ratio represents balance: straight lines containing beautiful curvature and chaos; structure making room for freedom; and the relationship between masculine and feminine energies.

All of this applies to how we sing. The voice is constantly negotiating opposing forces: power and release, compression and airflow, stability and flexibility, control and surrender. Much of singing is counterintuitive—more effort doesn’t always create more power, greater control may require more freedom, and the highest notes often ask us to release weight rather than push harder. Learning to sing means learning when to hold on, when to let go, and how to remain present between the two. That balance gives us not only a healthier, more capable voice, but also more choices and greater freedom to express what the song is asking of us.

Second only to singing technique, working with the nervous system and underlying psychology is what I specialize in. I have completed formal integration training through Being True To You, as well as years of focused study and learning in my personal life.

Questions

Before we begin.

How do online lessons work?

Lessons take place live through Zoom. We work together during the lesson, and afterward you practice with the recording so you can revisit the exercises, ideas, and adjustments that worked for your voice.

How much are lessons?

A single lesson is $100, or you can purchase a package of four lessons for $350.

What is your cancellation policy?

I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Please reschedule or cancel at least 24 hours before your lesson.

Do I need to be an advanced singer?

Absolutely not. I work with beginning bedroom singers and karaoke warriors all the way through professional recording artists.

You don’t need to know vocal terminology. You don’t even have to be comfortable singing in front of me yet.

I’m really shy about singing. Is that a problem?

No. It’s actually pretty common.

Part of learning to sing can be learning that it’s okay to make sound, experiment, crack, be imperfect, and let another person hear you while you’re figuring it out.

We can go slowly.

Can you help with confidence or emotional blocks?

Yes, within the context of singing.

I’m a vocal coach, not a therapist. But fear of being heard, self-consciousness, perfectionism, inhibition, and emotional disconnection can absolutely affect the way we sing.

Sometimes the technical door opens the emotional one. Sometimes it happens the other way around.

What styles do you teach?

My home base is contemporary music: rock, soul, blues, Americana, singer-songwriter, indie, pop, alternative, and country.

I’m not primarily a classical voice teacher.

Can you help with mix voice?

Yes. I actually want to make “mix voice” less mysterious.

Mix isn’t one ingredient. We’ll look at registration, weight, vowels, resonance, volume, and airflow and figure out how those ingredients are interacting in your voice.

Will technique change my natural sound?

I hope not.

I don’t want to take the weird stuff out of your voice. I like the weird stuff.

The grit. The breath. The crack. The vulnerability.

Technique should give you more choices and more ways of expressing yourself—not turn you into a generic “correct” singer.

What if singing hurts or I keep losing my voice?

Persistent pain, voice loss, or other concerning symptoms should be evaluated by an appropriate medical voice professional.

Coaching is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment.

What we can work on

The voice is one system.

Range & high notesLearn when to hold on—and when you actually need to let go of some weight.
Mix & registrationTake some of the mystery out of mix and understand the ingredients that create it.
Power without strainFind intensity without simply adding more force.
Tone & resonanceExplore different colors without sanding away what makes your voice yours.
Breath & compressionFind the amount of air and resistance the sound actually needs.
Confidence & shynessWork with fear, inhibition, and the experience of letting yourself actually be heard.
Rasp & distortionExplore texture carefully and intentionally.
Songs & performanceMake the technical work survive contact with actual music, emotion, nerves, microphones, and other people.
Online lessons

Here’s the plan.

01

You sing.

Bring a song, a question, a difficult note, or simply the part of your voice you don’t understand yet.

02

We experiment.

We meet through Zoom, change the ingredients one at a time, and listen to what your voice responds to.

03

We follow the breadcrumbs.

What changed? Why did it work? What did you feel? Can you find it again?

04

You practice.

After the lesson, you practice with the recording so you can revisit what worked and find it again.

Ready when you are

Let’s talk about
your voice.

You don’t need to know whether the problem is your breath, your mix, your confidence, your vowel, or some combination of all of them.

Lessons take place through Zoom. We do the lesson together, then you practice with the recording afterward.
